Oops I missed the groundhog

That was the other neat thing we saw on the bike ride Sunday. This unfamiliar rodent that was pretty big but not a badger, too fuzzy to be a beaver, and otherwise unfamiliar to a couple of Westerners ran under the fence next too us. We debated but weren't sure what it was. However with further research I think it was probably a groundhog, otherwise known, according to Wikipedia, as a woodchuck. It was certainly a big brown rodent.

Here's a picture of someone else's groundhog, assuming I can successfully link to the picture.
The picture comes from wikimedia commons, thanks to them!

Badgers and beavers are routine, but you get excited about a groundhog?! They're common as mud here "out east." They are cute when they run, though, with a sort of undulating motion to them. And surely, you have seen the movie Groundhog Day -- Bill Murray finds himself repeating the same day over and over again, and, in a fit of despair, decides the groundhog must be stopped!

Well, I haven't seen a live groundhog before. I like beavers and badgers but I know what they look like. This was a strange new critter.

We saw a woodchuck last month at Lake George in upstate New York! I wanted to call it a marmot...
